Drookit

I'm back now, in my less than sunny and dry home country. A change from what I've been getting used to - bone dry air with the sun and heat all day, every day. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. I will say that it was quite an adventure and a lot was learned about Spain, other people and myself. It was not as I imagined it would be. Overall a positive experience and something I would consider doing again in the future, even if I would now know certain things to avoid next time around.

I've come away with a lot of stories too. Not sure what can be told or how. It's all swimming around somewhat and will take a while to settle.

On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

After nine days I let the horse run free
cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la

A proper update will happen...eventually. Perhaps. Maybe.

Viva España

Yes, lucky you. Everyone here at deviantART is getting a holiday - from me.

For some time now I've been absorbed in planning and arranging the details for an adventure. In less than one week I am heading off to Spain. I am taking my camera with me. Possibly  some other less important items (such as clothes and so on). As a result you will all be spared my ranting for some time. A well deserved break for you.

Barring any problems I will be there for two weeks, minimum. If things go well I may be away for up to two months.

As I have no idea what kind of internet access I will have (and even if I do get any I know it will be limited) I may not have much chance to keep up to date here and answer any messages. If I do get reasonable access then the hope is that I will be able to update this place with photos from the adventure and whatever gossip I have in the journal. It all depends on how things work out.

The chosen few that are part of this great expedition and I leave on the 23rd with. Hopefully the camera and I will at least come back in one piece to tell the tale.

Not long now.

Edit: Now off in foreign parts

I'm away now. dA can breathe a collective sigh of relief. Be warned that I may be back, depending on how many shoes drop.

Summer Fête

A local school had its summer fête to raise money. Astonishingly and against all tradition for any kind of holiday or outdoor fair in this country, the weather was great. This event seems to have had a good run of luck that way over the years. I made a beeline for the bakery stall this year as last year I left it too late and only managed to get a single bag of scones as the feeding frenzy was over by then. I was much more successful in picking some treats from it this time around, thankfully. There was also a good array of fast food of various styles. I shall not be going hungry today.

I brought the camera with me, so I'll be going through some shots and seeing what I got. Perhaps even get around to uploading some to my much neglected page. They had a few good live bands on stage. My favourite had to be the rock chick and guitarist duo. The 60s were still alive for her, I think. Nice to see someone who was so into the music. Made it seem all the better, compared to some of the manufactured pop that do it all by the numbers like a machine would (competent, but without heart).

A good time was had by all.

New baby

At last there was a good day for photography with nice light and I had the chance to take advantage of it. I went out to test my new baby (the big white suitcase lens):

So far so good and no regrets. The first attempts on the day it arrived were not so impressive and naturally I was concerned, but I quickly found that this was more due to my lack of experience with this lens than anything else. Rather humbling. Today's results were much more pleasing and showed that even a little experience pays off. After a day out with it I feel it's more than a match for me. It will take a good while and a lot of practice to get the most out of it and to be able to use it as second nature.

Surprisingly, I am starting to get used to the weight and learn how to manage it. It does takes some getting used to as I've mostly been using a rather light camera set up for the last few years. Carrying it around will be very good exercise for me - a  bonus. It is making me feel a little less HDB than usual.

I've uploaded some images to my gallery and scraps from it. Apologies to my watchers for the sudden image flood.

UK shoppers

If anyone in the EU (or the UK especially) is looking for any suggestions for buying camera gear a little cheaper, then feel free to ask here and I'll pass on some general suggestions on where to look online. I got a very good deal for myself. Shopping around rather than going with the first place you think of can save a lot of money.

3D photography? Almost

First of all: watch this video.

Right now the technology is slow and rather rough around the edges - they do admit these are ideas just being tested in the lab and not intended to ever be finished products - but it was still a very impressive demonstration. There could be potential there for commercial or consumer use. The technology being developed and tested now in the industry is amazing.

I want.

On a similar note, I found this interesting: www.refocusimaging.com/gallery…

Penniless

I spent my pennies again...rather predictably on camera gear. Back to square one to start saving up again for something else (Probably to spend it on the camera on the next thing I have my eye on. It never ends). On the plus side I did find a dealer for it that saved me a very respectable sum compared to the other big names. If I haven't just been conned, that is. If it arrives fine I will be happily showing it off here. If I have been conned then look out for news reports of a bloody rampage (most likely involving me beating the con man to death with a lens and then photographing the body) followed by me dropping dead when my heart explodes with the stress of the rage and ranting.

We shall see.
